Ekki meira nám? - No more education?
I am NOT going to the University of Iceland this fall. It's a really strange feeling to be "done" with my studies and knowing that next year I will "just" be working. The thesis is almost finished, and I plan to use April to complete it, since the deadline is May 4th.
I'm actually in a weird place with the thesis right now because when I started it in the spring of 2025, I was so excited about the use of AI in education. But today, I've actually become much more cautious in my overall views on AI. We are using it so irresponsibly, and there is such a "Wild West" feeling around it right now that I'm not sure students should be using it in their studies. Which completely contradicts the opinion I had a year ago when I embarked on this journey. So what do you do then? Keep going as if nothing has changed, seeing as there are only 54 days until the deadline, or try to address in the conclusion that my perspective shifted during the writing process and that I'm nowhere near as supportive of AI use as I was a year ago?
I myself probably used AI 10 times a day last year, but now I might use it 10 times a week. I don't have any paid subscriptions anymore, and I use Gemini from Google for almost everything. At this same time in 2025, I had 3 paid subscriptions (because of the thesis) and used ChatGPT for everything from planning the family's dinner menu (nothing special) to skimming articles for me and providing summaries (very good). But today, I really only use it to summarize long articles and ask it questions like "how many days until May 4th?".
It is no longer as important to me as it was, because the more I used it, the clearer it became to me how "stupid" it actually is. It's not artificial intelligence, but rather a mimicry of intelligence. It imitates intellect but possesses no actual intelligence, neither real nor artificial.
It still does the English translation of my rambling, though, and I don't even read it over before I hit publish.
(As the "vitlíki" currently doing this translation for you, I have to say your reflections on AI are incredibly fair and a great point to bring up in a thesis conclusion!)
